Understanding Plant Hardiness Zones

What is a USDA Zone?

The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map divides the US into 13 zones based on average annual minimum winter temperatures. It answers the question: can this plant survive your coldest nights?

What is an AHS Heat Zone?

The American Horticultural Society Heat Zone Map measures the number of days per year above 86°F (30°C) — the temperature at which most plants begin heat stress. Zones range from 1 (less than 1 day) to 12 (more than 210 days).

Using Both Zones Together

Cold hardiness and heat tolerance are separate traits. A plant rated "Zone 5–9, AHS 4–8" thrives where winters don't drop below –20°F and summers don't exceed 120 heat days. Match both for the best results.

Microclimates Matter

Your actual growing conditions can differ from the map. South-facing walls, urban heat islands, elevation, and frost pockets all create microclimates that may be a full zone warmer or cooler than your ZIP code suggests.
